AVALON — The cause of a fire that destroyed two homes here last week has not been determined, but it is not considered suspicious, Fire Chief Ed Dean said.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire, which severely damaged a pair of multimillion-dollar bayfront homes near Pelican and Seagull drives.

“The official cause is undetermined — still under investigation,” Dean said Monday.

Dean said the properties have been released to the homeowners, which he said is a fairly typical step once officials have ruled out anything suspicious.

Crews responded to the fire about 7:45 a.m. Friday. One of the homes was occupied, and three adults and one child were able to escape safely and call for help, according to Dean.
