Congressman Frank Pallone Jr., D-6, asked that the federal government extend the public comment period another 60 days and hold a public hearing on the proposed seismic testing off the coast of New Jersey.

The letter, addressed to Kathryn Sullivan, the administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, asked for more time for the public to examine the potential risks involved with the testing.

The National Marine Fisheries Service requested permission to conduct marine seismic surveys off the coast of New Jersey, possibly starting this summer.

Pallone, who has criticized seismic testing and the potential for offshore drilling along the Atlantic Coast, said the testing could harm New Jersey’s shoreline and marine life.
