A man was charged with assaulting a police officer and drug offenses Friday after he refused to leave his room.
Officers John Pyle, Ermindo Marsini and Debbie Shields were called to La Renaissance on the 100 block of S. Kentucky Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. by management, who wanted to remove occupants from two rooms because they were causing disturbances, Sgt. Monica McMenamin said.
As officers knocked to get the occupants out of the ninth-floor apartments, management said people were climbing from the ninth-floor balcony down to the eighth floor, according to the report.
A man, later identified as Ronnie Shuman, tried to leave room 905, when Shields tried to stop him. He then tried to punch the officer, McMenamin said.
Marsini and Pyle helped take Shuman into custody. Everyone else in the room had fled, McMenamin said.
When officers entered the room, they found 91 grams of crack cocaine, more than 70 grams of heroin, 10.5 grams of marijuana and a scale.
Shuman, 38, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest, as well as possession and distribution offenses.
Also identified as occupants of the room were Waheed Hill, 30, and Felix Beltran, 33. They were both charged with possession and possession with intent to distribute and a warrant has been issued for their arrest.
Shuman's bail was set at $50,000 cash.
