ATLANTIC CITY — A man was in critical condition after he was found shot in the back Monday morning, Sgt. Monica McMenamin said.

Najee Roberts, 24, was conscious when police were called to the scene at South Carolina and Drexel avenues at about 10:30 a.m. He then underwent surgery at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus in Atlantic City.

Kawon Smith was walking back to the supermarket when he saw the victim on the street corner near where Smith lives.

“The only thing I seen was him laying on the ground screaming for help,” he said.

Smith said a man was giving the victim aid, and told him Roberts had been walking down Drexel Avenue holding his back.

The shooter had fled by the time police arrived. Witnesses told police a man fled toward South Ocean Avenue.

K-9 Officer Sam Rando and his partner did a track of the scene, but found no suspect, McMenamin said.

Shortly after the shooting, police were interviewing witnesses and focusing their search on an empty lot at the corner of Drexel and Tennessee avenues as well as reviewing surveillance footage from a nearby convenience store.
