A Burlington County man was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in state prison for trying to stab his mother to death in Vineland three years ago.
David M. Stone stabbed his mother in what his attorney said during earlier Superior Court proceedings was an attempt to rescue his younger brother from an abusive situation at home.
However, Stone, who was 23 years old when the incident occurred in February 2011, pleaded guilty in December to charges of aggravated assault and eluding police.
On Tuesday, Superior Court Judge Robert A. Malestine sentenced Stone to seven years in state prison on the aggravated assault charge during proceedings in the Cumberland County courthouse in Bridgeton. Malestine also sentenced Stone to three years in state prison on the eluding police charge, with the penalty to be served consecutive to the one imposed on the aggravated assault offense.
The sentenced stipulates that Stone serve 85 percent of the prison term on the aggravated assault charge before being eligible for parole, according to Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae.
Stone was originally indicted in December 2011 on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and eluding police. Stone faced a maximum of 30 years in state prison on all those charges, authorities said after the indictment was handed up.
Vineland police said the mother, Carol Nicholson, called authorities about 10 p.m. Feb. 3, 2011, and reported being stabbed. Nicholson, who was 51 at the time, was flown to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus in Atlantic City, for treatment of stab wounds to her neck, police said.
Police said they arrived at the Adler Lane home, saw a car leaving the scene and engaged in a short pursuit. Officers stopped the vehicle near Highland and Landis avenues and took Stone into custody, they said.
Residents living on Adler Lane and Highland Avenue said they were shocked at what happened in a neighborhood they described as quiet and uneventful. They said there were no indications of any problems involving Nicholson and her family.
Stone’s indictment reads that he was a resident of Browns Mills in Pemberton Township, Burlington County, when the stabbing occurred.
Nicholson was a former substitute teacher in the Vineland school district.
