An Egg Harbor Township man was charged with murder Saturday after he killed his girlfriend by striking her repeatedly with a hammer early Friday morning, authorities said.
Lashawn Smith, 36, is charged with murder, third-degree possession of a weapon and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the death of girlfriend Sarah Phillips, 28, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner said in a news release.
Smith was scheduled for a first court appearance Saturday in Mays Landing.
Egg Harbor Township police received a 911 call at 5:04 a.m. Friday about an injured woman inside a home in the unit block of South Zion Road, the Prosecutor’s Office said.
Officers responded and found Phillips, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday, the release said.
Two GoFundMe campaigns were set up by Sarah Phillips’ family members Saturday.
According to the pages, Phillips was the mother of four children who were younger than 11. The children are currently staying with Phillips’ mother, family members said.
Relatives of Phillips declined to speak further with The Press on Saturday.
An investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Egg Harbor Township Police Department resulted in Smith’s arrest, the Prosecutor’s Office said.
