An Atlantic City man was arrested with a loaded assault rifle Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Officers Brian Hambrecht and Nick Berardis were patrolling the 300 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. when they tried to stop a man who appeared armed, Sgt. Monica McMenamin said.

He ran toward the Boys and Girls Club, so the officers called dispatch to inform them they were chasing an armed man, according to the report.

Andrew James, 26, was arrested and found in possession of a loaded AK-47 loaded with hollow-point bullets, McMenamin said.

He is charged with possession of an assault weapon, possession of a large-capacity magazine, possession of armor-penetrating ammunition and obstructing the administration of the law.

He is being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on $26,000 bail.

Hambrecht and Berardis are part of the city's Tac Unit, which is assigned to specific areas of the city where there are high incidents of crime.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police at 609-347-5766 or Crime Stoppers at 609-652-1234. Information can also be texted anonymously to tip411 (847411), beginning the text with ACPD.
