MAYS LANDING — A New York man registered as a sex offender in California was sentenced to 20 years in prison Friday for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old Atlantic County girl, the county Prosecutor’s Office said.

Joseph Anthony Caracciolo, 50, who pleaded guilty, is also serving a 25-year prison term for the federal crime of travelling across state lines to engage in illicit conduct with the Egg Harbor Township girl, driving to New Jersey to pick her up and take her to the Poconos.

He was a registered sex offender in California at the time.

The Prosecutor’s Office said the assault occurred in July 2012. Egg Harbor Township police were alerted in April 2013, which sparked an investigation that included township police, the Prosecutor’s Office and county Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

On Friday, Superior Court Judge Patricia Wild sentenced Caracciolo, who must serve 17 years before he’s eligible for parole, the Prosecutor’s Office said. Upon release, he will be subject to lifetime parole supervision and Megan’s Law registration.
