SOMERS POINT - A vandalism incident left 10 football trophies smashed and abandoned at a sports field, said police Chief Michael Boyd.

Police responded to the Lawrence Bud Kern Field, on Marks Road, on Saturday and saw the trophies laying in a grassy area, Boyd said.

The trophies belonged to the Somers Point Sharks football team from past years and were kept in a storage area near the field. Boyd said some of the trophies were so badly damaged that the year could not be deciphered.

"I only saw one that said 1987," he said. They appeared to be smashed with baseball bats.

"It's peculiar. There doesn't seem to e any financial gains from this," Boyd said.

Te incident is under investigation. Anyone with information should call police at (609) 927-6161.
