Police have arrested a 20-year-old suspect in the fatal shooting of a Bridgeton man over the weekend.

Michael Russell Jr., was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with murder and unlawful possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in connection with a fatal shooting Saturday night, police said.

The victim, George A. Lewis, 36, was shot outside his residence on Spruce Street after an altercation, police said. He was shot in his upper torso and died while being transported to Inspira Health Center in Bridgeton.

Bail has been set at $500,000.

Police said the joint investigation by the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office and Bridgeton police department resulted in the arrest of Russell. The public also helped, police said.

"I am thankful that members of this community did the right thing in the aftermath of this tragedy,” Bridgeton Mayor Albert Kelly said. “You can see how efficiently the system operates when the public gets involved."
