Atlantic County is set to begin a $2.6 million highway improvement project this spring on Bears Head Road in Hamilton Township, a nearly five mile stretch that connects Atlantic and Cumberland counties.

In addition to resurfacing, the project will include the installation of new storm grates that conform to current standards, long life traffic stripes and raised pavement markings and the repair or replacement of guide rail as needed.

The project is actually two separate, federally funded projects awarded under one construction contract, County Executive Dennis Levinson said.

The project will begin when weather permits and should be done within 90 days.

The project will extend from Estelle Avenue to Pittsburgh Avenue and from Wheeling Avenue to the Avenue of the Pines. All are within Hamilton Township.

"We ask for the public's cooperation during construction," Levinson said. "These improvements are being made to enhance the safety of this roadway for the benefit of the traveling public."
