GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — Five people were injured Monday afternoon in a three-car crash on Route 30 that began with a driver traveling the wrong way on the highway, police said.
Police said the accident occurred around 6:23 p.m. Monday at Route 30 and Fifth Avenue.
Caridad Shieh, 62, of Cortlandt Manor, New York, was driving a 2003 Suzuki west in the eastbound lanes on Route 30, in a portion with a highway barrier, police said.
The Suzuki struck a BMW with three people in the car, continued driving and then struck a Lexus. Police said all the occupants in the three vehicles suffered injuries.
Authorities said Shieh made a left at Sixth Avenue and drove about a block in the eastbound lanes until reaching Fifth Avenue.
Shieh was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus, with moderate injuries.
The two passengers in the BMW were taken to AtlantiCare for minor in-juries. The driver of the BMW, Alexis Varela-Cano, 40, of Atlantic City, and the driver of the Lexus, Wilfredo Carreno, 69, of Absecon, suffered minor injuries, police said.
Shieh received a summons for driving the wrong direction on a divided highway.
Route 30 eastbound was blocked for about an hour after the crash during the investigation.
