Nearly a year-and-a-half post-Hurricane Sandy, the last school in the state closed by storm has reopened.
Students and staff of Long Beach Island Grade School in Ship Bottom, Ocean County returned to their classrooms Tuesday.
Long Beach Island Grade School serves the area’s third-through-sixth graders. Since the 2012 storm, its student body has operated out of the Ethel A. Jacobsen Elementary School in Surf City, and housed with the district’s pre-kindergarten through second-graders.
The Ship Bottom building was originally expected to reopen Monday, March 17 with a celebratory visit by Gov. Chris Christie, but a snow day postponed the opening another day and canceled Christie’s appearance.
The repairs to the building, funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, included fixing the roof, the gym floor, the boiler room, air conditioners, condensers, electrical and security systems and a playground.
