Scheid was at home in the Villas section when he heard a loud explosion at the home of neighbors Jim and Evelyn McCarty. He responded to the blast, believing survivors may still be trapped inside. He and other neighbors began removing debris, pulling the couple from the house, which later burned to the ground.

The medal was presented by Cape May County American Legion commander Norman Marlin at Post 254's monthly meeting in Ocean City.
