PLEASANTVILLE — An Egg Harbor Township man tried to steal nine boxes of Newport 100 cigarettes from Wawa this week while two uniformed police officers were in the West Delilah Road store, police said Friday.

Robert Jones, 32, went behind the counter, grabbed the cigarettes and ran out of the store at 2:33 p.m. in sight of Patrolmen Girard Tell and Ryan VanSyckle, who were wearing badges and vests that read “POLICE,” Capt. Matthew Hartman wrote in a news release.

“Tell verbally identified himself as a police officer, as the large white lettering and visible badge had apparently not deterred Jones, and ordered Jones to stop,” Hartman said.

Jones did not stop, Hartman said. Jones jumped in the back of a car parked on the side of the building.

The officers followed Jones and instructed the driver of the car, Angelina Dixon, 33, of Mays Landing, to stop, police said.

Tell and VanSyckle found Jones trying to hide in the back seat, police said.

When Jones ignored police orders to exit the vehicle, officers used pepper spray and removed him from the car, police said.

Jones and Dixon were arrested on charges of shoplifting goods less than $200, a disorderly persons offense. Jones also was charged with resisting arrest.

They were released on summonses. No injuries were reported.
