MIDDLE TOWNSHIP — Township School District Athletic Director Scott Lodgek resigned Wednesday amid a theft investigation in which he admitted to stealing more than $1,000 from the high school sports account, police said.

Lodgek, 48, of Linwood, is charged with official misconduct and theft, according to township police.

The school district contacted police Tuesday after officials found money missing from the high school account. Cape May County Prosecutor Robert Taylor and Middle Township police Chief Christopher Leusner conducted a joint investigation that revealed a total of $1,825 missing from the school’s sports account, police said. They said the thefts occurred on two different occasions.

Middle Township Superintendent David Salvo announced Thursday Lodgek resigned from his position as athletic director.

“The board of education will approve the appointment of an interim athletic director and begin the search for a permanent AD as soon as possible,” Salvo wrote.

Salvo ended the statement by saying the district’s staff, including coaches, is committed to maintaining the high academic standards and athletic opportunities the students, families and community have come to expect.

Lodgek was released on a summons pending a court date.
