Few details were released about the crash, and it was not immediately clear if the officer or anyone else was injured.

In a statement, Farabella said he is not commenting any further on the crash, as it is under investigation.

In September 2014, McLaughlin was charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to a wear a seat belt when the car he was driving went off Carmel Road and into St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. The car belonged to Officer Charles Twigg, who also was in the vehicle. Both officers were thrown from the vehicle and injured. Both were off duty at the time.

The Press of Atlantic City previously reported that on Oct. 14, 2015, McLaughlin pleaded guilty in Vineland Municipal Court to reckless driving. Other charges against McLaughlin of driving while intoxicated and failure to wear a seat belt were dismissed.
