Northfield Fire Department is in the running to win $500 from the New Jersey American Water Company to purchase equipment for its Rapid Intervention Team, a highly trained rescue team at the scene for situations involving trapped or injured firefighters.

Northfield Fire Department, which is made up of both career and volunteer firefighters, is one of few departments in Atlantic County to have its Rapid Intervention Team, which responds to calls for many local departments, including Bargaintown, Cardiff and Farmington Fire Departments in Egg Harbor Township, West Atlantic City, Pleasantville, Somers Point, Linwood and Atlantic City International Airport.

The department plans to use the $500 to purchase a portable radio, which firefighters keep on their person to talk to one another.

“That’s one way we can find out where an firefighters is injured or trapped and get to them as fast as possible, said Lt. Brian Flaherty, who has taken on the responsibility of promoting the contest.

A total of 21 Fire Departments from throughout the state are participating in the contest.

The winning department will to be chosen based on the number of votes via New Jersey American Water Company’s Facebook contest link,

Flaherty is encouraging the community to vote daily for the department, which is currently in the lead by more than 100 votes.
