Hammonton firefighters responded to a large fire at the former W. Skinner and Son, Inc. glass factory Tuesday night.
The fire, which broke out at 7:40 p.m., required mutual aid from area fire departments. The building is located in the 300 block of North Egg Harbor Road near the intersection of Pratt Street.
According to Jack Valerio, a Hammonton volunteer firefighter, said the cause of the fire was still under investigation as of 9:30 p.m.
At that time, firefighters were still on scene combating the steady blaze.
Due to the large size of the fire, tanker trucks actually drained area fire hydrants and had to create portable ponds.
Valerio said trucks would fill up at the township’s White Horse Pike fire station and then transport the water back to the burning factory.
He said the boarded up factory has become a popular site for squatters, but doesn’t know if that could be contributed to the cause of the fire.
