“I’m honored to serve the citizens of Atlantic County and the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office,” Petuskey said. “It’s definitely, truly an honor.”

Balles announced in early July he would be leaving his position five months before the end of his term to return to the Pleasantville Police Department. He is now serving as a captain, his rank before elected sheriff.

Petuskey said he will continue to carry on the department tradition of serving the people in the county for as long as he holds the position.

Petruskey began working in law enforcement in 1989 as a member of the Hamilton Township Police Department, and was promoted to deputy chief in 2014. He retired from the department in January 2015 and was appointed undersheriff in July 2015.

Petuskey will serve as interim sheriff until a new sheriff is appointed or elected.
