The issue: The Absecon Board of Education will vote on whether to adopt its budget for the 2010-11 school year.

Why it matters: Every public school district in New Jersey will get less state aid next year. In most cases, the cut will be about 5 percent of each district's overall budget and likely mean higher taxes and smaller staffs. In Absecon, that amounts to a reduction of $594,888, or 36.2 percent, from last year's $1.6 million award.

When: 7 p.m. Tuesday

Where: Media Center of the H. Ashton Marsh School, 800 Ireland Ave.

What's next: Absecon's budget as introduced is $12 million and would be supported by a $9.63 million tax levy. That means taxpayers would owe another 1.7 cents for a total tax rate of $1.001 per $100,000 of assessed property value. Voters must approve the budget by a two-thirds majority April 20.
