Egg Harbor Township

Administrators sought

for middle, high schools

The township school district is looking for two new principals and an assistant principal.

Alder Avenue Middle School Principal Missy Peretti, who was on maternity leave and has worked in the district since 2003, submitted her resignation letter last week. Her last day in the school district will be June 30. Peretti will become the new superintendent of the Harrison Township School District in Gloucester County in July. Patricia Hoey, the current Harrison superintendent, said Peretti was selected last month to be her successor after she retires.

At the same time, Egg Harbor Township will look for a new principal and assistant principal for the high school. Principal Darren Hickman submitted his resignation letter last month after spending two years in the district. High School Assistant Principal Patricia Connor will transfer to Dr. Joyanne Miller School to replace Beth Anne Richey, who is retiring. The other new Miller school assistant principal will be Craig Kahn, an assistant principal from the Mullica Township School District. He will replace Cathleen Smith, who will be the new principal at the C.J. Davenport schools.

Egg Harbor Township Superintendent Scott McCartney said the district is advertising for the principal jobs. He hopes to have new appointments by September or interim principals in place to oversee the schools.

McCartney said the district is looking for a "dynamic educational leader" to fill the jobs. The starting salary for the high school principal job would be about $99,700; the middle school principal job would be about $97,700; and the high school assistant principal job would be about $77,000.

Teachers receive

governor's awards

The township school district presented several awards to teachers last week through the governor's teacher recognition program.

The winners are: Laura DelPrete, a first-grade teacher at H. Russell Swift School; Maria Huba, a second-grade teacher at E.H. Slaybaugh School; Nancy Tobias, a gifted and talented teacher at C.J. Davenport School; Erica Schaffer, an adaptive physical education teacher at Dr. Joyanne Miller School; Jody Gowdy, a gifted and talented teacher at Fernwood Avenue Middle School; Gavin MacNeill, a sixth-grade teacher at Alder Avenue Middle School; Mary Cairns, an English language learner teacher at Egg Harbor Township High School; and William Liddell, a counselor at Eagle Academy.

The teachers will get a $500 gift certificate to use for the classroom, a special parking spot, and attend a special luncheon with county officials and dinner through the Egg Harbor Township Education Foundation.

Folsom

Councilman's land helps

borough improve ballfields

The borough has acquired a 28-acre property from a borough councilman and his family to make the adjacent recreation fields more accommodating.

When the Folsom School District needed extra land to install a new septic system a few years ago, the borough agreed to deed restrict a piece of municipal property to the school district. The problem with that was the borough was planning to use that land to build a snack bar and bathrooms to serve the recreational fields.

"We knew it was hurting our future plans," Councilman Matthew Olive Jr. said. "But we also knew that the school had a dire need to upgrade."

To follow through with its plans, the borough found a 28-acre, triangular-shaped property that stretches from 13th Street to 12th Street along the southwest border of the ball fields. It belonged to Councilman George Eckhardt and his sisters, Katherine Gaudet and Margaret Roush. They agreed to sell it to the borough for its appraised value of $213,000.

"It wasn't being used for anything and we have other acres that I use for farming," said Eckhardt, 64, a retired American Airlines pilot who raises hay. "This way, the property will be able to be kept as open space where facilities for the ball fields can be built. And most importantly, we will not be faced with it becoming another development."

"The funding all came through the county's open-space grant program," Olive said, adding that construction on the new facilities will wait until the renovation of South River Park is completed.

"I'm optimistic that the economy will turn around soon so we're able to have the new facilities at the ball fields within the next two years," Olive said.

Longport

Commission adopts

budget, appoints officials

The Borough Commission gave final approval Wednesday to a town budget that will increase local taxes by about $15 on each $100,000 worth of assessed property value.

The vote for the $6.8 million budget came with little comment. The commission held a public hearing on the spending plan at a meeting earlier this month.

In other business, the commission reappointed Tom Hiltner borough clerk and appointed two deputy clerks, Ellen Chialastri and Emilia Strawder. The former acting clerk, Monica Kyle, resigned from that job this month.

In a related move, Marty O'Boyle, who has battled the borough in a series of court cases related to the state's Open Public Records Act, asked the commission to rescind a move it made two weeks ago to limit inspection hours for public documents to six hours per week - two hours each on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The commissioners wouldn't make that move, but Mayor Nick Russo left open the possibility they could.

"I am not opposed to increasing the access (once) people get settled into the new positions," he said.

Hiltner, who is also the clerk in Margate, was Longport's clerk until earlier this year, when the commission made Kyle the acting clerk and moved Hiltner to deputy clerk.

O'Boyle, who recently sued Longport in another OPRA case, said last week that one of his sons plans to sue over the limited access hours to documents.

Mullica Township

First case of rabies

confirmed in township

A raccoon found chasing a cat May 11 has tested positive for rabies.

The raccoon was spotted chasing the cat by a property owner in the area of South Carolina and Fourth avenues. The municipal animal control officer removed the raccoon from the property and sent it for testing at the New Jersey State Department of Health Laboratory, where the rabies test results were confirmed May 18, according to Atlantic County Health Officer Patricia Diamond.

An investigation by county health officials indicated there were no human exposures, officials said.

It was the township's first confirmed case of rabies this year and the second case found in Atlantic County in 2009.

"If you find a wild or stray animal on your property you should contact your local animal control officer," Diamond said in a release.

The Atlantic County Division of Public Health asks anyone who has been bitten or exposed to an animal through a scratch or had any contact with the animal's saliva, to seek medical attention immediately and report the bite by calling 609-645-5971.

Weymouth Township

School district earns

a top rating from state

The township school district was rated a "high performing school district," under a quality review by the New Jersey Department of Education.

The state's Quality Single Accountability Continuum, or QSAC, evaluates school districts in five categories, and Weymouth scored more than 90 percent in each one. The Weymouth School District got 91 percent for instruction and program, 95 percent for fiscal management and 100 percent for operations, personnel and governance. State Education Commissioner Lucille E. Davy notified Weymouth Superintendent Donna Van Horn about the results in a recent letter.

Under state law, Weymouth's certification is good for three years until the next QSAC review.
