MAYS LANDING - Ethan Allen, a high-end furniture maker and retailer, is closing at the Consumer Square shopping center.
The exact date is unknown, but salespeople at the Mays Landing store said it could happen as soon as the end of the month.
Louis Levine, operator of the regional franchise, could not be reached for comment Monday about the closing.
The 9,500-square-foot store opened in May 2000 as the sixth of its kind in the southern New Jersey-Philadelphia region.
Ethan Allen's stores, known as "design centers," employ trained design consultants and sell pieces manufactured mostly in the United States. There is another store in southern New Jersey in Maple Shade, Burlington County, which Levine also operates.
The Connecticut-based retailer now joins Levitz, Bassett, and Furniture & More Galleries among the local furniture stores that have closed within the past few years as the recession has sapped business.
Earlier this year, DD Huber Furniture & Design, better known as Oskar Huber, closed stores after filing for bankruptcy protection in 2008. The company said it was overwhelmed by the severe housing downturn and tightened credit markets.
Its store at Kensington Square in Northfield was quickly replaced by Kensington Furniture.
Meanwhile, another furniture store already has opened at Consumer Square. Just Cabinets Furniture & More opened last week in a 27,000-square-foot space. It is the Harrisburg, Pa.-based chain's 20th store.
