Night to remember for Hammonton grads

HAMMONTON - More than 320 Hammonton High School seniors became the school's 113th graduating class Monday night.
Class President Frank Capoferri, who began the ceremony with a saxophone rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner," welcomed his fellow graduates to a moment he said they would remember even when they are aged and frail.
"Although we are always told to look to the future, I believe on this day we all need to stop. Think about the past. And reflect on our accomplishments," he said.
Salutatorian Kristen Gazzara told her fellow graduates that the paths they traveled to their graduation are just as important as those they have yet to pave.
"It is impossible to have a future, without first creating a past," Gazzara said. "It is time to take the things we've learned mentally, physically, and emotionally and apply them to our future goals. It is time to push forward as individuals and make our mark on the world."
Principal James Donoghue and Superintendent Mary Lou DeFrancisco - both of whom will retire after the school year - encouraged the graduates to enjoy life's journey and not to fear change.
However, Valedictorian Katelyn Litchko admitted that the graduates were all a little wary of the change and unknown that lies ahead.
"Four years ago our biggest fear was walking into the doors of Hammonton High School. Now, our biggest fear is walking out," said Litchko, who plans to major in pre-veterinary medicine at the University of Connecticut.
But Litchko said each of the graduates' different dreams and goals would help them overcome these unknown challenges.
"Our dreams and goals give us a purpose," she said. "It is these dreams that will help us through the change that lies ahead. For without them, what is there to guide us down our path? ... We have achieved goals before, and there is nothing stopping us from achieving them again."
