Work to close intersection

The intersection of Madison and Massachusetts Avenues will be closed for several weeks, starting Monday, while a new sewer main is installed, the contractor said.
Detours will be posted. People who live on Massachusetts Avenue between Grammercy and Madison can reach their homes via Grammercy Avenue. Residents of Madison Avenue between Vermont and Massachusetts can get to their homes using Rhode Island Avenue.
Sidewalks will also be closed during the construction. The work is expected to be finished Aug. 28.

Committee gives final OK

Estell Manor
Council gives unanimous
approval to sports complex
City Council is moving ahead with a plan to build a sports complex behind the municipal building.
The council approved the proposal in a 5-0 vote Wednesday. Mayor Joe Venezia said the next step is to have the engineer create a final plan for the project, which consists of two sports fields, a walking path and drainage work. The project would then be sent to the Pinelands Commission for approval.
Venezia said he hopes construction could start by the end of the year and that fundraisers can be held to contribute to the project. The city got a $328,000 Atlantic County open-space grant for the complex.

Longport
Official Saturday meetings
make debut next weekend
The Borough Commission's next official meeting starts 10 a.m. July 18 at the Borough Hall.
The commission agreed last year to hold two Saturday meetings this year, in July and August, to give the owners of summer homes more access to the town's government.
Next month's first meeting is Aug. 5, the normal Wednesday-evening schedule, but the second meeting is set for Sat., Aug. 22.
The governing body will start Saturday-morning work sessions at 10 a.m., with the formal voting sessions following 30 minutes later.
Members of the last Borough Commission scheduled advisory committee meetings for nonresident property owners during their term in office, which ended in 2008. But this summer's meetings are believed to be the first formal weekend commission meetings.
Town party July 18
Longport's annual town party is scheduled for July 18, behind the town hall.
Tickets are on sale Monday through Friday in the hall. The cost is $25 for adults and $10 for children, which includes a barbecue menu, deejay and dancing and beer for guests 21 or older.
The party is sponsored by the Longport Volunteer Fire Department.
