Janet A. McCormick, wife of ex-Press publisher, dies

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. - Janet A. McCormick, of Hendersonville, died Tuesday at the Elizabeth House following her courageous battle over four years with ovarian cancer.

She was the wife of Robert M. McCormick, publisher of The Press of Atlantic City and executive vice president and Chief Operating Officer of South Jersey Publishing Company from April 1994 until his retirement in December 2000.

The McCormicks lived in Linwood and later in Longport during their years in southern New Jersey.

She was a member of the Charity League and the Atlantic City Day Nursery, a pre-school.

A resident of Henderson County for the past 10 years, she was a daughter of the late Alfred H. Ahrens and Helen Congdon Ahrens. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church.

In addition to her loving husband of 52 years, Robert, survivors include four children: Susan M. Heisler, of Flat Rock; Teri M. Berrier, of Holly Springs; Robert M. McCormick IV, of Alpharetta, Ga.; and Mark P. McCormick, of Centreville, Vir; one sister, Judith A. Thomas, of South Bend, Ind.; along with nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Joel G. Hafer officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Four-Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
