Egg Harbor Township grads told to strive to ‘improve yourself and better society’

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - Striving for your best was the message constantly repeated at the Egg Harbor Township High School graduation Tuesday.
Salutatorian Danielle Barth reminded the graduates that they have dramatically grown up over the years, and "with every obstacle, we became stronger and it taught us a lesson." Barth noted the students will be "leaving our sheltered lives behind" and go out into the world to "create our own happiness."
Valedictorian Pamela Rosario encouraged more than 500 of her classmates to think outside the box and avoid following the crowd. She noted that she wasn't always a perfect student, and many great historical figures became famous for being different. "In the beginning, you might aspire to fit in and be accepted, but that gets you so far. ... Be extraordinary. Don't start to fit in. Start to improve yourself and better society," she said.
Rosario added that it doesn't matter if you go to college, technical or trade school, so long as you "know your destination and be confident." She closed her passionate speech, which was done in English and Spanish, by giving the graduates "the authority to seize their dreams."
The mood at the high school football stadium was exuberant as thousands of family members, friends and well-wishers crowded the stands with cameras, balloons and flowers. Someone hired an airplane to fly over with a banner that congratulated the graduating class, particularly Katie and Chris. Another group posted several hand-made signs on High School Drive supporting Jake.
At the end of the ceremony, the new graduates turned their tassels, listened to the recessional music, then walked off into the sunset.
