Atlantic City

Pinkett out of race

for City Council

Less than two weeks from the June Democratic primary, another candidate for three vacant City Council seats is out of the race.

Durwood Pinkett, 34, announced Thursday he is dropping out of a crowded City Council race but gave no explanation for his decision.

"This was a very difficult decision," he wrote in a brief e-mail. He could not be reached on his cell phone for further comment.

Pinkett in February was one of the first residents to announce his candidacy. He made headlines last month when The Press of Atlantic City discovered his criminal record, which includes charges involving a shooting nearly two decades ago.

Pinkett joins Councilman Eugene Robinson and former school board President Bert Lopez on a growing list of candidates who have dropped out of the running. Like Robinson, Pinkett will likely remain on the June 2 ballot. Lopez filed a court order to have his name removed from contention.

Unlocking of ocean

set for Sunday

Miss Atlantic City Roshni Shah and Mayor Lorenzo Langford will symbolically unlock the ocean at noon Sunday at Beach Patrol Headquarters, South Carolina Avenue and the beach. Lifeguards will toss a wreath on the water honoring veterans.

On Monday, a Memorial Day service will be held 11 a.m. at the All Wars Memorial Building, 1510 Adriatic Ave. Langford will give the welcoming address. Joseph Hicks, commander of Kenneth Hawkins Post 61, American Legion; and Stephen P. Jones, quartermaster of L.T.J. Willis Gale Post 215 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will speak. The Neptune Drum and Bugle Corps and vocalists will perform.

Following the service, a concert is scheduled from noon to 6 p.m. at Kennedy Plaza, between Georgia and Mississippi avenues. The concert will feature rhythm and blues, rock, jazz and gospel bands.

Longport

Holiday parade to end

with motorcycle dedication

The town's annual Memorial Day parade will have a new starting time and a new finish.

The parade is set to start at 11:15 a.m. at 33rd and Atlantic avenues, 15 minutes later than the traditional time, Mayor Nick Russo said. The new schedule is to allow police motorcycles from neighboring Margate - which are also part of that town's 10 a.m. parade - to help lead Longport's short parade to the town's veterans' memorial, the mayor added.

Longport's two new police cycles will also be at the head of the parade there, and plans call for the day's ceremonies to continue behind the Borough Hall with a dedication of Longport's patrol cycles. The motorcycles were donated as part of a program started by Jimmy Binns, a Philadelphia lawyer with a summer home in Margate. Binns also got the cycles given to Margate and has arranged many motorcycle donations to police in Philadelphia and other nearby towns.

Margate

Commission adopts

$25.2M. city budget

The City Commission gave its final approval Thursday to a $25.2 million budget that increases local taxes by about $19 on each $100,000 worth of assessed property value.

The governing body held its required public hearing on the budget last month but couldn't formally adopt the spending plan until the state's Department of Community Affairs gave its approval.

Margate's school board reduced taxes slightly - by about $7 on every $100,000 worth of property value - in a 2009-10 budget that officials passed in April.
