HAMILTON TOWNSHIP - An accident on Route 40 Monday night caused little injury but created a traffic nightmare for about an hour while everything was cleared, police said.
James Romer, 26, of Mays Landing, was driving east on Route 40 at about 8:10 p.m., and was reaching for his cell phone or using it, when he went off the road at milepost 48.8 and crashed into a utility pole, police said. The pole snapped at the base, causing wires to come across both lanes of the road.
Romer, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered a minor injury and refused treatment at the scene, police said. His car sustained severe front-end and driver's side damage and had to be towed.
As police arrived on scene, a minivan driven west by Dale E. Guhr, 75, of Jupiter, Fla., crossed the downed wires, police said. One or more of the wires attached to the rear bumper, lifting the rear of the minivan into the air. Guhr sustained a minor injury and was treated at the scene, and his passenger, Nancy J. Fettes, 68, of Jupiter, was not injured. Both were wearing seat belts.
Traffic was detoured around the area for about an hour while the scene was cleared, police said.
Romer was given a summons for careless driving and Guhr was ticketed for driving a vehicle with an expired registration, police said. Officer Trenton S. Lee investigated.
The Township of Hamilton Rescue Squad, the Mays Landing Fire Company and Atlantic City Electric all responded to the scene, police said.
