Trash fire damages Roosevelt Blvd. home

From Press staff reports

An early morning fire Sunday caused an estimated $20,000 worth of damage to a home on the 100 block of North Roosevelt Boulevard, city fire Lt. John Maguire said.

Firefighters were called to the home at 5:46 a.m. after receiving a report of a trash fire. When they arrived, they found the family had left the home and light smoke was coming from the rear of the property.

The homeowner said the family learned of the fire with the help of smoke detectors and attempted to put out the fire with a home fire extinguisher.

Fire crews extinguished the fire quickly, and it was declared under control in less than five minutes.

Fire personnel remained on the scene for about 45 minutes, using ventilation fans to remove smoke from the home. The fire was confined to the rear of the home, and the family was allowed to return.

The fire began in a rubbish container and was deemed accidental, Maguire said.

Fire in dunes neared catamarans

Firefighters battled a dune fire early Sunday morning on the 2300 block of the beach, city officials said.

According to Capt. Jack Neall, firefighters arrived at the scene about midnight to find a moderate working fire. After pulling 500 feet of hose to get to the blaze, Neall said, firefighters had it under control in about 10 minutes.

While the fire was close to a beach location where catamarans are stored, no property was damaged, Neall said.

"We knocked it down before it got to the catamarans," he said.

Police ID man who fell off watercraft

A 35-year-old Philadelphia man was taken by ambulance to Cape Regional Medical Center on Saturday night after he fell off a rented personal watercraft he was riding in Richardson Sound.

According to police, Derrick Starks was listed in stable condition at the hospital as of late Saturday night. A nursing supervisor at the hospital did not return a call Sunday seeking an update on Starks' condition.

Police were unable Sunday to provide a reason as to why Starks, who was riding in the sound at about 5:27 p.m., fell off the watercraft and ended up lying face-down in the water.
