Two women were injured in a crash Friday that left a sport utility vehicle resting on a traffic light pole that it knocked down at Pomona Road and Route 30. Story on C2.

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - Two women suffered serious injuries Friday afternoon when their vehicles collided at the intersection of the White Horse Pike and Pomona Road, snarling traffic for hours, police said.

Robin M. Taylor, 23, of Little Egg Harbor Township, was driving east on Route 30 at

4:19 p.m. when she attempted to turn left onto northbound Pomona Road (Route 575) and went into the path of a westbound sport utility vehicle driven by Tasha Y. Mayhew, 33, of Somerdale, Camden County, police said.

Mayhew's SUV struck Taylor's car, pushing it off the roadway, police said. The impact caused Mayhew's SUV to roll over onto a traffic-light pole, knocking it down, police said.

The SUV came to rest on its roof at the base of the traffic-light standard, and two traffic-signal units lay in the westbound lanes of the White Horse Pike. Taylor's demolished car came to rest in a parking lot about 40 feet to its west.

Mayhew had to be extricated from her vehicle by the Pomona Fire Company, police said. She suffered internal injuries and was airlifted to the Trauma Unit of AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus.

Taylor suffered internal and leg injuries, and was taken by ambulance to the city campus, police said.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, and airbags in both vehicles were deployed, police said.

The westbound lanes of the White Horse Pike were closed for 2 hours while the scene was cleared, police said. Traffic was also detoured off Pomona Road.

No summonses were issued, pending completion of the investigation by Patrolmen Greg Bolliunger and Rich Barber.

Want to really get the scare of your life?? Try making the turn onto Jim Leeds Rd off of Rt. 30. The cars behind you are coming up so fast it's frightening. That entire area is a tragedy waiting to happen. Looks like this was a tragedy.

RT 30 was designed for horses and buggies, not speeding inattentive drivers. I travel this route everyday and it behooves me how fast people drive once they pass the Rams Head Inn. Seems to me the only people that get stopped and searched and hauled in are people who are DWB. Galloway needs an overhaul of their traffic unit.

Stop blaming the DOT & THE STATE, people need to slow down, OBEY the SPEED LIMIT, PAY ATTENTION, AND STAY OFF THE CELL PHONES!! Wait, instead of thinking you can beat the vehicle coming at you!

I couldn't agree more with the above post. That intersection is a total hazard and death trap. Guess the state is waiting for the new transit village before something is done. Folks, avoid making ANY left hand turn at that intersection and slow down when you approach it.

it is unconscionable how long this intersection has gone ignored by the state DOT. how many more serious injuries and deaths need to occur there before the intersection is improved?
