EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP -- The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a dead body that was found on the side of the road by a creek early this morning.
Clayton Davenport, a retired parole officer who lived in the neighborhood for 35 years, said he was sitting out on his porch around 8:15 a.m. smoking a cigar when he noticed about a dozen police cars and other emergency vehicles drive down the road and block the street off to traffic for about three hours.
Shortly after that, Davenport said a jogger passing by his house and told him that he found a dead young woman over the side of a bridge that crosses over the Fenton's Mill creek. Davenport said the jogger initially thought it was a Halloween prank, then the jogger noticed her face was blue and he waved down a bicyclist who called 911.
Davenport and his wife, Charlotte, said the surprised by the finding because their street is normally very quiet and they watched as police officers check out the banks of the creek. "It's a safe neighborhood," Clayton Davenport said. "We don't have crime here."
Another Spruce Avenue resident, Paulette Andreadis, said she was sitting down for her morning cup of coffee when police officers knocked on her door and asked her if she noticed anything unusual.
Andreadis, who lived in the neighborhood for 28 years, said she was shocked when the police told her a dead person was found in the area. She said the neighborhood is very quiet and the biggest activity is the cars that drive through the road during the day. "Everyone keeps to themselves and are busy working," she said.
