Fortune smiles on Absegami

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - They were blessed again.
Rain drops stayed sealed inside steely clouds during the entire graduation ceremony Tuesday night on the football field of Absegami High School.
Valedictorian Sharif Farghaly reminded his 505 peers of how lucky they had already been.
"As we progress in our lives, I challenge you to share what's been given to you at Absegami with the rest of the world," he said. "Class of 2009, do not shirk from difficulty. Take the challenge to offer peace, offer love, offer beauty."
Salutatorian Sofia E. Papastamelos also encouraged classmates to remain steadfast amid the inevitable challenge each will face.
And she reminded the brown-and-gold-robed seniors of their good fortune at the many opportunities ahead.
The high school diploma presented to each of them Tuesday, she said, was the first step in fully attaining the key to making the most of those opportunities: education.
She related the tale of "Three Cups of Tea," in which an American mountain climber recovers in a poverty-stricken Pakistani village after a failed attempt to scale a steep peak. He vows to return to the school to build a town and keeps his promise, despite obstacles. For his efforts, the children formerly faced with a bleak future instead had choices for the first time. Education similarly empowers people in the U.S. on an arguably grander scale, she said.
"Men and women from modest means and minority status can rise ... to lead our country," Papastamelos said. "Let us not forget how lucky we are to have had this opportunity and that we must give back."
