Daniel’s spent 37 years at Shore Road and Pierson Avenue in Somers Point. The property spent its next two lifetimes as farmer’s markets before it was demolished in 2003.

A weekly feature that answers reader questions about the people, events, history and news in southern New Jersey.

Q: On a recent nostalgia trip to the shore, my friends and I were visiting our back-in-the-day landmarks and couldn't find Daniel's Restaurant. It had great Italian food and big, juicy prime rib. Bring us up to date.

Carolyn Anderson, Doylestown, Pa.

Answer Guy: Alas, Daniel's closed in 1993, five years after mounting debt forced the restaurant to go into Chapter 11 bankruptcy and 37 years after it opened at Shore Road and Pierson Avenue in Somers Point, Press archives show.

'As far as dining, they prefer the light and lively and fast. No more time on fine dining,' owner Danny Antolini told The Press of Atlantic City in 1989, referring to the changing times brought on by casino gambling in Atlantic City.

The site transformed and changed owners several times over the following years. From Daniel's, it became a Pennsylvania Dutch farmer's market, which lasted only a few months before closing and reopening in 1994 as the Shore Road Farmer's Market. The second farmer's market closed in 1998, and the building was demolished in 2003.

The land is still cleared and is owned by Progress Realty Inc., of Northfield, according to the city Tax Assessor's Office.

These days, you can find Antolini in the kitchen at the Anchorage in Somers Point, working for one of his former employees, former Daniel's chef Don Mahoney.

To many excellent restaurants have gone bankrupt but I don't think all can blame the casino's.
