Pleasantville graduates cross 'bridge' to their future

PLEASANTVILLE - The choir members swayed and clapped as they belted out Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" at Pleasantville High School's graduation Monday evening.
Then one giddy soon-to-be-grad stood up and joined in. Then a few more. And within a few bars of the song, all 194 caps and all 194 gowns were moving as one.
The graduates were in a good mood, though some of their friends and family were sour at not being able to squeeze into the standing-room-only gymnasium. Some tickets that would have been honored in an outdoor ceremony apparently could not be accommodated in the smaller venue.
Speakers occasionally strained to be heard over the din of the audience. But the messages were getting through; any mention of "the Class of 2009" provoked an instant, deafening round of applause and cheers.
Salutatorian Marie Tunis congratulated her peers for overcoming "bumps in the road."
"We came together as one class and forgot all the petty nonsense we held onto as underclassmen," Tunis said.
Valedictorian Cindy Gonzalez told her fellow students to work hard in pursuing their dreams, and in a poor economy, "if you are going to invest in something, invest in yourself."
Then she closed exuberantly: "We made it, y'all, we're out of this place. Peace!" And the crowd went wild again.
