Assemblyman Vincent Polistina Danny Drake

Assemblyman Vince Polistina, a Republican representing Atlantic County, said Wednesday he will announce his intention to run for the state Senate seat in the 2nd legislative District at a rally tonight.

Polistina, a resident of Egg Harbor Township, said he plans to challenge Democratic incumbent state Sen. Jim Whelan, who has held the seat since 2008.

The announcement is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Farmington Fire House, 301 Maple Ave. in Egg Harbor Township.

"I am seeking the Republican nomination to run for the 2nd District state Senate seat," Polistina said Wednesday. "New Jersey for many years has been a failing state, and the existing senator has been part of that problem. I'm happy to stand with Gov. Christie and work toward reducing taxes, cutting spending and ending our reliance on debt."

Whelan said Wednesday he would not comment before Polistina makes his formal announcement.
