The Atlantic City Fire Department has ruled an early morning fire on Maxwell Avenue as suspicious.

Fire Chief Dennis Brooks said the fire, which ignited outside on a porch of a home at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, was not set accidentally. He said the immediate area has had a series of fires in the past, and he hopes a new string of fires will not begin now.

Smoke from the fire entered the second floor of the home, which had open windows, and damaged the property, Brooks said.

A family of five was evacuated, but no injuries were reported, he said.
