For the third time in eight months, residents reported booming noises and rattlings in the southern New Jersey area Tuesday afternoon.

The first reports came in after 3 p.m. and included windows rattling or loud booming noises.

The National Earthquake Information Center, in Calif., received calls, but reported no seismic activity.

Geophysicist John Bellini said that there are many possibilities including off-shore weather or military testing.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service said it is possible, if there is an off-shore thunderstorm, that thunder could be felt and heard further inland. But there were no storms recorded off-shore Tuesday, NWS said.

Bellini added that reports of the same issues came from Delaware and Virginia on Tuesday.
