The investigation into the disappearance of Daniel Burroughs was “open and active” since the Mays Landing man was reported missing by his wife in 2007, Hamilton Township Police Chief Stacy Tappeiner said Saturday.

Burroughs’ remains were found Friday inside a closet in his wife Loretta’s Ventnor home, where she moved after his disappearance. Loretta Burroughs, 61, was arrested and charged with murder and a weapons offense.

In a written statement, Tappeiner declined to comment on details of the investigation but said his department and the New Jersey State Police Missing Persons Unit had been involved in solving the case in the six years since Loretta Burroughs reported him missing.

According to information given at Loretta’s first court appearance Friday, the disappearance was deemed a missing persons case until a family member approached the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office’s Cold Case Unit in February.

Tappeiner referred all other questions to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
