EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — Fire crews responded to a home Friday night in the Bargaintown section after lightning touched off a fire on the home’s roof.

Scullville Fire Chief Steve Prisament said fire crews were dispatched just after 6 p.m. to the home on Spray Avenue. Flames and heavy smoke were seen coming from the house.

Homeowner Dustin Pepper, 32, said he was inside, sitting on the couch, when he first heard the lightning that struck his home.

“It sounded like a bomb went off,” he said.

Pepper said he saw sparks around the house, then ran outside and saw smoke coming from the roof.

Prisament said lightning did strike the home, causing a small fire that burned the home’s siding and traveled down the downspouts of the gutters. Firefighters removed some of the burned siding to check that the fire was fully out.

Neighbor John Hanlon, 42, said he mostly saw the smoke but knew immediately it was a lightning strike.

Hanlon, who lives across the street, said neighbors initially grabbed garden hoses to try to put out the fire before firefighters arrived.

No injuries were reported, and the Pepper family will not be displaced.
