A Stockton College student has been indicted on a vehicular homicide charge in connection with a Galloway crash that killed his passenger more than a year ago, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced Monday.
Joao Simoes, 22, of Newark, was driving down Vera King Farris Drive at about 9:30 p.m. Oct. 4, 2011, when his car collided with a deer.
The collision caused Simoes’ vehicle to leave the road and hit several trees, according to the report.
Passenger Joseph Miller, of Medford, who would have been 22 the next day, died as a result of the accident, authorities said.
Simoes was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Simoes was driving at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash, according to results of an investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Fatal Collisions Unit and the Galloway Township Police Department.
Simoes was issued a summons for reckless driving following the crash, and on Oct. 23 of this year was indicted on one count of second-degree vehicular homicide.
Simoes turned himself to the Prosecutor’s Office in Nov. 1 with his lawyer.
He was released after posting bail, which had been set at $50,000.
