People who come to hear Judith "Judy" Courter, of Absecon, talk about her book, "Fred & Ethel Noyes of Smithville: The Artist and the Entrepreneur," often have strong personal memories of the couple and the many businesses and organizations they created.

"It's been amazing. It's my first book, and it hit a lot of people close to their hearts and memories," Courter said. She has been on a whirlwind book tour in South Jersey, doing speaking engagements in venues as varied as high schools and retirement villages. Today, she will be in Hammonton at Casciano's Coffee Bar & Sweetery.

Fred and Ethel Noyes, who started the Historic Village at Smithville and the Smithville Inn, the Noyes Museum, and the Ram's Head Inn, had very different personalities that complimented each other, Courter said.

"Their personalities balanced. She became more and more intense, because she was managing a huge business," Courter said. "He was the jocular troublemaker, who was also wonderful with people. He supported her every step of the way."

Chubby comes home

Chubby, the 20-pound, bear-like cat with extra-large paws, is back at home after disappearing for 15 days, said owner Kim Styer, of Seaview Harbor in Egg Harbor Township.

"He didn't look any worse for wear," she said last week, after the cat showed up at her door last Sunday, acting like nothing happened.

Styer took out an ad in The Press and offered a reward after Chubby disappeared Nov. 16. A Nov. 24 Press story described Styer's efforts, as well as those of Galloway Township's Sharon Levin, whose Tonkinese cat Bella has been missing since Oct. 3.
