Galloway police arrested a man driving a stolen vehicle Friday morning.

Corp. Gerald Houck observed a suspicious vehicle at 9:48 a.m. at Moss Mill Road and Leipzig Avenue. He talked to the driver, John E. Hamlett, 30, of Newfield, who said he was lost and asked for directions, police said.

Hamlett then drove off in the vehicle and struck a tree before driving off on moss Mill Road, police said. Houck found the car a short time later east on Bremen Avenue.

Hamlett lost control of the car and it drove off the road and struck several trees, police said. Hamlett fled on foot and was apprehended.

A police search of the vehicle found it to be stolen from Hammonton on Oct. 30, police said. The vehicle sustained heavy damage.

Hamlett was charged with possession of stolen property and obstruction of justice. He was also charged with several motor vehicle offenses including reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident.

He was transported to Atlantic County jail on $50,000 bail.
