MARGATE - The Board of School Estimate approved the budget for the 2010-11 school year Wednesday night.

School taxes will increase $0.0047 under the plan as the budget rises 5.5 percent to $12.5 million. That sum includes the $10.5 million local levy and $252,824 in state aid next year.

The vote was 4-1, with City Commissioner Dan Campbell voting against it. Campbell said he had expected to see substantial savings in the budget following the district's decision to close the Union Avenue School and consolidate district students in its other two schools.

The district reduced the increase from 6.5 percent to 5.5 percent in the past week. District Superintendent Theresa DeFranco said the $110,000 cut came from moving two teachers from full- to part-time and reducing other schedules to essentially lose half a position.
