A raccoon in Buena Vista Township tested positive for rabies, Atlantic County officials announced Thursday.

The county’s Division of Public Health said the animal was retrieved on the 100 block of Cedar Avenue in the township after it had a fight with a dog Saturday. It is the first reported case of rabies this year, the county said.

The dog had not had its rabies shots and no humans were exposed to the animal, the county said. The dog’s owner must now decide whether to place the dog under a six-month strict confinement or have the dog euthanized, the county said.

Rabies can be fatal if left untreated, and the county said pet owners should give their animals the vaccine.

The Atlantic County Animal Shelter gives a free rabies vaccination clinic each month at 240 Old Turnpike Road in Pleasantville. The next clinic will be on March 24 from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information, call 609 485-2345 or visit www.aclink.org/animalshelter.
