GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — Richard Stockton College is hoping to make a distinctive impression with a new “branding element” that combines the first letter of the college with its osprey mascot.

The new Stockton “S” entwines the letter with the head of an osprey in the Stockton colors of black and white with touches of Columbia blue and gold.

The logo was designed by the college Graphics Production Department, with Gary Schenck as lead designer. He said in a statement announcing the logo that the design has the effect of morphing the osprey out of the letter, and the letter out of the osprey.

Geoffrey Pettifer, director of Marketing Communications in the Office of External Affairs, said the biggest challenge was to effectively morph the two images. The result was a fierce-looking osprey head with eyes focused downward as if swooping onto its prey. Variations of the design were shown around campus for input in choosing the final design.

A window cling of the logo is available in the bookstore at the Campus Center, and will also be available soon as a magnet. Plans also call for using it on Stockton clothing, printed items and possibly future athletic uniforms.

“It’s a versatile piece that can be incorporated into the institutional branding effort and in many other areas,” Pettifer said.
