ATLANTIC CITY - An auditor told the Board of Education on Monday night its financial management was "stellar" this past year, and will need to stay that way if the surplus diminishes.
"Budget-wise, we should be good for the next two years," said Harvey Cocozza, of Alliance of Governmental Auditors LLC. "In the future, it's going to be tight."
Cocozza identified only one flaw in the district's bookkeeping: some staff absences had been ascribed to the wrong people in a database. No fiscal problems were found.
"In the four years I've been on this board, this book is getting smaller and smaller," said board President Shay Steele, holding the packet of paper containing the annual audit.
Also Monday night, the board heard Assistant Superintendent Donna Haye's report on school violence and vandalism.
There were 95 violent incidents in the district in 2008-2009, down from 118 the year before, and 43 substance-abuse problems, 19 fewer than in 2007-2008.
There were five incidents of vandalism, down from 20. Eleven weapons were found in the school year, two more than in the year before.
