A man was killed by a train Monday afternoon while walking on the track just east of the Lindenwold station, shutting down NJ Transit's Atlantic City Rail Line for nearly three hours, a company spokeswoman said.

The train bound to Philadelphia from Atlantic City struck the victim at about 4:30 p.m. on a section of the track where people are not authorized to walk, NJ Transit spokeswoman Courtney Carroll said. The victim's identity and details of the accident were not immediately known.

Service on the Atlantic City line was suspended while the scene was investigated and cleared, Carroll said. The trains began running again at about 7:15 p.m.

During the shutdown, PATCO honored NJ Transit tickets between Philadelphia and Lindenwold, Carroll said. Passengers traveling between Lindenwold and Atlantic City were advised to make other arrangements for transportation.
