ATLANTIC CITY - Growing up in the diverse population of Atlantic City High School uniquely prepares its students for life in the real world, the Class of 2009's valedictorian told her 534 fellow graduates Thursday morning.

"We came into this school as inexperienced freshmen, but I believe we are leaving as young, sophisticated adults," Alexandra McCue said from the dais at Boardwalk Hall.

Salutatorian Ariel Glick preceded her at the podium, predicting her class' generation would be the one to cure HIV, cancer and swine flu, as well as improve the environment.

"We're heading off into a messy world," Glick said. "Humans are the ones who got us into this mess, and we're the ones to get us out."

Students read the poems "The Road Not Taken" and "As You Travel Through Life" for inspiration. The class also presented an honorary diploma to Marquis Laquay McGowan and a diploma to the family of Amy Nicole Hauck, a senior who died in a car accident May 8.
