UPPER TOWNSHIP - Holiday travelers will have another route to the shore this weekend.
The state reopened the Route 49 bridge in Tuckahoe on Thursday morning after rebuilding the dilapidated span on the state road.
Route 49 is an alternate route to the shore that travels through Cumberland and Salem counties.
It had been closed since October while construction crews replaced the bridge with a taller prefabricated span.
The $4.2 million project forced posted detours through Woodbine and - much to the chagrin of neighbors - unofficial detours through the rural streets of Tuckahoe.
The new bridge straddles the NJ Transit railroad lines used by the Cape May Seashore Lines excursion between Tuckahoe and Richland in Buena Vista Township.
This part of Upper Township has its share of bridge woes. The Marshallville Bridge remains closed. Meanwhile, the state plans to replace the Route 50 bridge over the Tuckahoe River in 2011.
